What is lagniappe?
A lagniappe (/ˈlænjæp/ LAN-yap, /lænˈjæp/ lan-YAP) is "a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase" (such as a 13th doughnut on purchase of a dozen).
“Lagniappe.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lagniappe.
The word entered English through Louisiana French, which had adapted it from a Quechua term introduced to New Orleans by Spanish Creoles. For the purposes of this textbook, it is used to provide additional context or supplementary information related to the main topic. Some examples are specific to Louisiana, while others are more general. All sections labeled as "lagniappe" are intended as extras to deepen understanding.
