Lumbar Punctures and Epidurals:

Lumbar Punctures and Epidurals are always done at underneath L3 because the spinal cord usually ends around L1 or L2. Lumbar punctures are used to detect infections in the brain by looking at CSF that is drained from the brain.
An Epidural is a nerve block that is used to prevent pain.

Meninges:
• Dura Mater- DURABLE, the outermost layer
• Arachnoid Mater- Spider web structure, CSF is held in the Subarachnoid space, which is deep to the Arachnoid Mater
• Pia Mater- innermost layer, closet to the spinal cord, similar to plastic wrap vacuum sealed around the spine
