About this Book

Mathematics is one of the most misunderstood subjects in school. Everyone says you need it, but there is a cloud of anxiety and dread hovering over it, which is subconsciously passed on from generation to generation. This is not how it needs to be. Math for Elementary Teachers is designed to prepare future teachers to break this cycle.
The format of this book is very informal. You are a part of the discussion and discovery. Through this process, you will learn the mathematics at a deeper level and, consequently, will be comfortable teaching it. Features of the book include:
  • Printable, hands-on manipulatives;
  • Built-in exercises and activities throughout the sections to check your understanding of what you just read.
  • Classroom Connections and Teaching Tips that connect what you are learning to your future as a teacher.
  • Louisiana Student Standards for each section.
This work was adapted from Julie Harland’s Understanding Elementary Mathematics, a series of hands-on Workbook Modules.

In addition to the modification of Ms. Harland’s original work. The authors use an online course management and assessment system for mathematics called MyOpenMath. It is used primarily as a reinforcement and assessment tool. It includes instructional videos with homework assignments, with the option of their outcomes counting as a grade. Access to MyOpenMath content for this OER textbook can be found in the LMS course associated with it.

Amplify Classroom was also used to create virtual manipulative images for this book. It is also suggested to be used by students for online forum assignments in the LMS course.
