vi. Hazing Prevention
True leadership doesn’t require harm—it requires heart.
At the University of New Orleans, we believe that every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and respected—especially when joining a student organization, team, or community.
We’re committed to building a campus culture where belonging never comes at a cost, and students are welcomed through encouragement, not intimidation.
What is Hazing?
Hazing is any action taken—or situation created—intentionally or recklessly that causes embarrassment, harassment, harm, or risk (whether physical, mental, or emotional) as a condition of joining or continuing in a group.
Hazing can include:
- Forced alcohol or substance use
- Physical or verbal abuse
- Sleep deprivation or forced exhaustion
- Public humiliation or degrading tasks
- Coerced activities meant to “prove loyalty” or “earn membership”
- Any activity where participation is not truly voluntary
It doesn’t matter if someone agrees to it—consent is not a defense to hazing under UNO policy or Louisiana state law.
UNO’s Hazing Policy
UNO follows strict policies in line with Louisiana State Law (Act 635) and the University of Louisiana System Hazing Prevention Protocol. All students, organizations, and advisors are expected to:
- Complete mandatory hazing prevention training
- Report any suspected or observed hazing behavior
- Ensure new members are onboarded through positive, respectful, and inclusive practices
Violations of the hazing policy can result in disciplinary action, including loss of organizational recognition, suspension or expulsion, and legal consequences.
What to Do if You Suspect Hazing
- Is someone in Danger? Call 911 immediately.
- Report It. You can report hazing through UNO’s Student Conduct Office or via the UL System Hazing Reporting Form.
- Talk to a trusted staff member. SIL, Student Conduct, Counseling Services, and other campus offices are here to help.
- Support your peers. If someone is struggling with their experience in a group, check in and connect them to resources.
Create Positive New Member Experiences
SIL offers training and resources for all student organizations to create welcoming, educational, and values-based onboarding experiences. If you’re starting a new group or revamping your traditions, we’re here to help you do it right.
