iii. How Are Majors and Careers Connected?
Choosing a major can feel like a big decision—sometimes even overwhelming. It’s common to wonder: Will this major lock me into one career path? What if I change my mind? The truth is, your major can influence your career direction, but it doesn’t determine your future.
Think of your major as one piece of a much bigger puzzle. It’s a starting point that helps you build knowledge and skills, explore your interests, and prepare for a variety of opportunities. Some majors—like nursing, accounting, or engineering—may have more direct career pathways. Others—like English, psychology, or interdisciplinary studies—can lead to a wide range of roles depending on how you build your experiences through internships, student organizations, part-time jobs, and personal interests.
Career planning isn’t about locking yourself into one future. You must stay curious, build skills, and find a good balance between what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and where opportunities exist.
In the six videos below, you’ll hear from real UNO students in a variety of academic programs sharing how their major connects to their career goals—and how they’re staying open to new directions as they grow.
