ii. A Welcome Letter from the Director of University College

Dear Privateers,

Welcome to the University of New Orleans! We’re so glad you’re here.

As the Director of University College, I want to be one of the first to say how proud we are to welcome you to the Privateer family. You are now part of a vibrant, diverse, and resilient community rooted in the heart of New Orleans—a city known for its creativity, strength, and soul. Like the city we call home, UNO believes in the power of transformation, persistence, and connection.

This semester, you’re beginning your journey in University Success 1001, a course designed to help you start strong, find your footing, and begin shaping the future you imagine for yourself. Whether you’re the first in your family to go to college or carrying on a tradition, your story matters here. You belong here. And we are here to support you every step of the way.

College isn’t always easy—and that’s okay. Learning how to learn, manage your time, ask for help, and bounce back from setbacks is part of the process. In fact, those challenges are opportunities to grow. In University College we believe in a growth mindset: the understanding that your abilities and intelligence can develop with effort, strategies, and support. Mistakes aren’t signs that you don’t belong—they’re signs that you’re trying, learning, and pushing yourself forward.

So here’s my advice:

  • Show up and stay curious. Attend your classes, engage with your instructors, and ask questions—even the ones that feel scary to ask.
  • Connect with others. Make friends, meet with your advisor, and get to know your professors. College is better (and easier!) when you’re not doing it alone.
  • Take care of yourself. Your well-being matters. Make time for sleep, movement, food, and things that bring you joy.
  • Give yourself grace. You’re learning, growing, and building a future. That takes time and patience.

University College is your academic home during this first part of your journey. Our team is here to help you navigate, adjust, and thrive. Whether you’re celebrating a win or working through a tough week, we want to hear from you.

Privateers don’t sail alone. We’re in this together.

Wishing you courage and curiosity on your UNO journey,

M. Shannon Williamson, Ph.D.

Interim Director, University College
