i. A Welcome Letter from UNO’s President
Dear Privateers,
Welcome to the University of New Orleans! Whether you were born down the bayou or arrived from across the globe, I’m thrilled to have you join our vibrant campus community.
This semester, you’ll be taking part in University Success (UNIV 1001)—our signature seminar for new students that is designed to help you plant strong academic roots and start building your legacy at UNO. But this course is focused on more than just navigating college—it’s about exploring your “why.”
To me, my “why” is about what gives me a sense of purpose. It took me longer than I would like to admit figuring this out, and I wish that I had been able to take a course like this when I began my college journey at the University of Massachusetts! Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to pursue a psychology major in order to do research and teach, thanks to a few great professors that encouraged me.
Why are you here? What drives you to succeed, to learn, to grow? In a city as rich in spirit, determination, and creativity as New Orleans, these questions take on new meaning. At UNO, we believe that your story matters. And we know that our community grows stronger when students from every background bring their voices, experiences, and dreams into the classroom.
Throughout this seminar, you’ll reflect on your personal values, develop essential college skills, and connect with mentors who are invested in your journey. You’ll also get involved—in campus life, in service, and in the broader culture that makes New Orleans so unforgettable. I hope that you will stay curious and take a few risks as you stretch outside of your comfort zone. We’re honored to walk alongside you as you explore your purpose and discover what kind of difference you want to make.
Sincerely, Kathy E. Johnson, Ph.D. President, University of New Orleans |
