The coiled tube of the small intestine is subdivided into three regions called the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The ileum joins the cecum of the large intestine at the ileocecal sphincter. The ileocecal valve controls the flow of chyme from the small intestine to the large intestine. See Figure 11.8 IMAGE ATTRIBUTION for an illustration of these regions.
